Artist Of The Day: TV Girl “Baby You Were There” (VIDEO)

Your Artist Of The Day on this fine Thursday morning is a band named TV Girl; who are a San Diego-based indie-pop duo made up of Trung Ngo and Brad Petering.

I’ve been a big fan of TV Girl’s for a few years, ever since they released their awesometastic eargasm of a debut EP. Their sound reminds me of late 60s sunny lounge pop that wouldn’t be out of place in a Beach Boys/Bacharach sandwich. Everything about these guys is short, very sweet, to the point and bound to have your head bopping and your face a smilin. To illustrate that fact, please witness exhibit A: The Bio.

Trung and Brad decided to record some stuff.”

Love it.

Take a look at the adorable music video for TV Girl’s adorable new single “Baby You Were There” and then adorably download their new EP, Benny and the Jetts, F-to the-R-to the-E-to the mothafuckin-E!

Artist Of The Day: Ximena Sariñana “Different” (VIDEO)

My Artist Of The Day is a wonderful Mexican singer named Ximena Sariñana and someone I suspect you will all be hearing a lot about in the near future.

Ximena is a huge star in Mexico thanks to a whole host of successful film roles and she released a very well received debut album entitled “Mediocre” a few years ago. Her style is tough to pinpoint, but musically she almost reminds me of Lilly Allen; which makes sense considering Greg Kurstin produced a few tracks on Ximena’s self-titled 2nd album (1st in English).

The new album was recently ranked as one of the top 25 or so albums so far in 2011 by Spin Magazine (who, oddly enough, I generally tend to agree with). There’s not a bad track out of the 11 on the record, but some of my favorites include The Bid, Echo Park, Tomorrow, Wrong Miracle and (lead single) Different. It’s fun, chirpy and lots of fun to listen to while walking around the park. Fans of Imani Coppola, Lily Allen, The Bird and The Bee, etc should be all over it.

Check out the video for “Different” below.

Artist Of The Day: Gus Gus “Over” (VIDEO)

My Artist Of The Day is a band from Iceland that I’ve been a fan of since high school, named Gus Gus. Their 1999 album “This Is Normal” still to this day gets a hefty amount of airtime in my iTunes, thanks to songs such as Ladyshave and Love vs Hate; but it’s been a long time since I’d heard anything new from the band. Since then, Gus Gus have gone through a series of internal shake-ups with band members, but they’ve kept on making music all the way through; releasing 4 albums in the last decade alone. And, after hearing their latest album, Arabian Horse, I think I may need to go back and listen to the album’s I’ve missed out on.

I’ve had Arabian Horse for a few months now, but I only listened to it for the first time just last week, after seeing the weird, yet cinematically beautiful, video for their HOT new single “Over”. This song is so good that I’m pretty close to naming it my song of the summer for 2011. The only thing more addicting than the sick house beat pulsating through every second of “Over” is the male/female double chorus that has been pleasantly stuck in my head for the last 7 days.

It’s pretty infuriating to think that “Over” will probably never get the chart attention it deserves. Because, more than any other song I’ve heard from Gus Gus throughout their career, this one is their #1 hit. Watch the gorgeous video below and then pick up Gus Gus’ latest masterpiece of an album, Arabian Horse. One of the top 10 albums of 2011 for sure.

Artist Of The Day: Alex Winston “Velvet Elvis” (VIDEO)

Fred Hystere fave, Alex Winston, is today’s Artist Of The Day thanks to the visually gorgeous video for her ace new single “Velvet Elvis”.

I’ve given Alex heaps of praise ever since the release of her ESSENTIAL debut EP “Sister Wife” late last year. She comes from outside Detroit, with a background in Opera, and I have a feeling that she’s goint to vault into superstar territory when her full-length debut comes out in early 2012 on Universal Island.

“Velvet Elvis” isn’t as immediate of a smash as previous singles Locomotive and Sister Wife, but it’s still pretty great. But it’s the video for the song that’s enough to make you fall in love with Alex and her music. Not only does she look like the gorgeous lovechild of Emmy Rossum and Vanessa Carlton, but it looks as though she had a blast using those acting skills of hers.

I can’t recommend Alex’s music enough to all of you. Out of every artist I’ve written about, Alex is easily one of my top 5 favorite talents of 2011. Buy her music NOW and thank me later.
