My love affair with the Australian music scene has been the highlight in my music collection over the last 3 to 4 years with artists like Cut Copy, Gypsy & The Cat, Bag Raiders and The Presets leading the way. I’m not sure what’s gotten into the Aussie drinking water of late; but, whatever it is, I hope they keep drinking it!
The Presets have been around for a long time and I’ve actually been a fan of theirs since one of their first singles, Girl and the Sea, was released sometime around 2005 (I’m too lazy to look up if that’s actually when it came out, but it sounds about right). From their very first record, they’ve been just as good as anyone at blending dance music with rock, but for my ears they’ve always been just a tad too gritty and have let their guitars talk louder than their beats. (That’s just my own opinion, don’t fucking send me hate mail, bitches.) However, with their latest album, Pacifica, they’ve made a record that ticks every single box on my path to one of the biggest eargasms I’ve had all year.
I’ve been tweeting about Pacifica for about a week now nonstop; and I’ve described it as making me want to do two things: Dance and fuck. Over the first portion of this year, any time I said an album made me want to fuck, I think it was more because of the fact that I wasn’t getting laid (mostly because I was recovering from illness). But now that I’ve been getting laid again regularly, I think it’s fair to say that I really fucking mean it when I say an album makes me wanna fuck.
Pacifica is the type of album with the ability to make you feel sexy while listening; the beats are bouncy, the hooks are endless and lead singer, Julian Hamilton, brings the whole party full circle with his dark, low vocals. The entire record reminds me of nights at the Roxy on Saturday nights in the 90s, dancing my face off and going back to some guy’s apartment for some late night sex making.
Definitely an Album Of The Year contender FOR SURE. Oh, I already said that above. Well, I mean it. Buy it now.
My favorite tracks are the PERFECT “Promises,” and sexy lead single, “Youth In Trouble.” Listen to both, below.
