Typically I like to inject a little humor into Daily Dickhead posts, but every once in a while someone pisses me off so mightily that I begin to sweat profusely and the clothes on my body burn off, leaving me naked, wet and angry. Ok, fine..that doesn’t really happen. But, seriously, you KNOW I’m pissed off about something when I can’t find any humor in it whatsoever, and such is the case with comments made last week by counterproductive-mental-midget, Jimmy LaSalvia of (ironically named) GOProud.

The driving force behind my hatred for Republicans has always been about the way they treat women, gay people and minorities, which is why the mere suggestion that someone gay would also identify with being Republican is the most headscratchingly absurd load of bullshit this side of Donald Trump’s candidacy for President (of anything other than his own asshole). So it will come as no surprise when I say that the existence of gay Republican groups such as The Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud is civil regression at its worst.

Jimmy LaSalvia is the co-founder and executive director of oxymoronic gay Republican group GOProud and someone that, on principle, I cannot STAND. LaSalvia actually got his start with The Log Cabin Republicans, but actually left the organization due to his belief that they were becoming too ‘left wing’ after refusing to endorse that bastion of gay rights, George Hairy Bush, when he ran for reelection back in 2004 and barely endorsing Diapers McCain in 2008. So, in 2009, he launched GOProud.

Without getting into the laundry list of reasons why GOProud has done themselves anything but..um…proud, let’s just cut to the chase.

Last week LaSalvia appeared on MSNBC to make the argument that the gay community needs to “focus our efforts on preventing hate crimes by advocating for stronger Second Amendment rights.” Now go ahead and re-read that sentence again just in case you didn’t grasp the irrelevance between hate crimes……and…..Second Amendment rights.

I can’t believe that I even need to say this, but the whole ‘war on the Second Amendment’ that has been fabricated by Republicans (and the NRA) is just that: A fabrication! To be clear, preventing hate crimes has NOTHING to do with the Second Amendment and, if anything, having LESS guns in the possession of whackadoodles makes more sense than giving them easier access to guns.

But, then again, I’m probably asking for too much from a man who’s reportedly planning on supporting gay rights enemy #1, Batshitty Bachmann, for President.

Hello Everyone! Welcome to your Fredhead Weekend 10! It’s fucking hot as balls here in the NYC metropolitan area and I’m officially melting.

Before I get to the music, I want to talk a little about personal growth. I know, corny subject.. But, for those of you that either follow the site regularly or know me well, you’re probably aware that the last few years have been a huge struggle for me between the death of my father, the heartbreaking end to my 6 year relationship with my ex and losing my job due to the demise of the company I’d been with for years. (Not to mention the struggles with confidence that I’ve had to endure throughout every ordeal). But, luckily, I’ve always seen a light at the end of the tunnel and have always felt that, as long as I’m learning from my mistakes and improving myself, everything will be ok.

In my opinion, the greatest barometer of personal growth is to look around at the people you have in your life and the people you let into your life. When the shit hit the fan a couple of years ago with my ex, I made a promise to myself that I was going to get rid of EVERYONE in my life that caused me stress. Easier said than done, right? Seriously, though, life’s too short. Of the many reasons my ex and I had for breaking up, it all came back to the fact that we just weren’t having fun anymore and had stopped learning from each other. Our breakup affected me DEEPLY, but what’s come out of it has been a whole new me and the people in my life reflect that the most.

Nowadays, the people I’m closest with are those that give me back what I put into the relationship. I’ve shed a lot of friends in the last couple of years, but I think the only way to learn what you *do* want is by first discovering what you *don’t* want. And after a couple of years of getting the “don’t” people out of my life, I’m finally beginning to meet people that possess the traits I *do* want in a friend..and even more than a friend.

One more thing that’s contributed mightily to my personal growth in the last couple of years (and then I’ll get to the music..I swear!), has been learning how to enjoy being alone. As resident therapist to most of my friends, I often get asked “Why can’t I meet someone? They always say you find someone when you’re not looking, but how do I stop looking when I want it so badly?” And my answer is always the same: You stop looking when you don’t *need* someone else to make you happy.

While I’m a total goofball, I’m also kind of a romantic at heart and, like most people, was moved while watching the famous scene from Jerry McGuire when Tom Cruise says “You complete me” to Renee Zellweger. But the reality is that you’ll NEVER find the right person if you’re looking for someone to complete you. You need to complete yourself and regard finding someone else as an ADDITION to your already completed self. And how do you complete yourself? By focusing on you and spending time alone. When you’re by yourself, you have no other choice than to get to know yourself better. It’s your chance to finally be honest with yourself about your shortcomings and work on them.

That’s what I’ve been doing for the last couple of years and, while it’s been a painful ride, I must be getting close because I met a great guy a few weeks ago who is a perfect reflection of me and what I ultimately want in someone else. I have no clue whether or not we’ll end up dating or if he’ll even be in my life for much longer (he lives in another city and was up here for business), but that’s not the point anyway. The point is that after years of not meeting ANY guys that are worth more than a hot fuck or a mini fling, I met a guy who is very close to what I’m looking for ultimately in another guy. That’s a reflection of me and where I am in my journey. And it’s how I know I’m (finally) headed in the right direction.

Parfum Brutal are a German quartet made up of lead singer & violinist Kassandra Papak, cellist Daniel Brandl, pianist Philip Mancarella and drummer Arno Bauch. Notice the absence of guitars? Well these guys don’t really seem to use them much, if at all; which explains why their sound is almost baroque in style.

Lead singer Kassandra’s voice is extremely rich and very versatile and many of Parfum Brutals songs sound as if they could’ve been plucked off Imogen Heap’s angst-y solo debut “I Am Megaphone”, with one noticeable difference: They’re (mostly) happy.

They describe their music in a pretty unique way:

“Rummage Pop – music about urban love, emancipated rabbits, final goodbyes and happy hangovers, this is the sound of the band Parfum Brutal from Germany.”

I have no clue how I heard about these guys, but they somehow popped onto my screen a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been pretty addicted to them ever since. Every one of the songs posted on their SoundCloud page are great, but “Today” is certainly a cut above the rest. A little Fiona, a little Regina, a little Imogen, a lot of musical and many smiles. Meet Parfum Brutal.
